As Suthering had explained, Flynn and I would receive our âordersâ in an email that day. His means of communicating with us peeved me. I was bound and determined to talk to the man whoâd be able to actually guide me with my elven coming-of-age ordeal. And here he was resorting to or depending on the least personable means of communication possible.
Via a damn email. A message that stated Marcy would be waiting for us in an electric cart at the Main Hall side door to deliver us to our âwork.â Sheâd drop me off at the stable to meet with Otis and then take Flynn to the greenhouse. According to Marcyâs explanation at the dorms last night, it was a setup that most upperclassmen enduredâless classroom time and more hands-on education on campus.
Flynn and I hardly had time to talk around the conversations that took precedence with our peers. Quarterlies were coming up and the rush to study and cram was the language we spoke.
âYou get that study sheet from Chan?â Flynn asked as we met in the hallway and hurried toward the side door.
I nodded. âItâs like thirteen pages long!â
He shook his head and held the door open for me. âHe has no mercy.â He ran his hand through his dark, wavy hair and groaned. âOn top of everything from yesterdayâ¦â Another shake of his head. âWe still have to freak out and worry about exams too.â
It did seem like a raw deal. But what would complaining do about it? In fact, I was actually kind of excited to return to Otis. Among all the things going on in my life, I was concerned about the older ranch hand. Seeing him in the flesh would at least alleviate my worries about his injuries.
Marcy waited on the paved drive, yards from the building, and I lifted my hand in a wave. It should have been so surreal and out-of-the-norm, being whisked away from the Main Hall and the classrooms weâd usually be in.
âReady?â she asked from the driverâs seat of the golf cart.
Readyâ¦for? I knew we were being shipped off for mentoring, Sutheringâs way of keeping us from the rest of the councilmembersâ direct control. I assumed I would be assisting Otis with the horses. Tasks I was familiar and comfortable with.
âSure.â
She didnât reply, but it seemed something was on her mind. After she opened and then closed her mouth, she looked in her rearview mirror. Lowering her sunglasses, she told me, âJustâ¦donât let him push you too far.â
Otis? I frowned. How would he ever push me anywhere? The old man was a gentle giant. âOâ¦kay?â
âWeâll pick up where we left off at the greenhouse, Flynn,â she told him.
The greenhouse. Flynn had shown Suthering and everyone in our gym class that he was capable of commanding the horses. So why was he still stuck in a building with plants? Yet another question for another time. Marcy picked up her phone when it rang and then she spoke in single-word replies to someone.
